A beautiful antique Victorian japanned wooden jewellery or keepsake box in a classic chinoiserie style, dating to the late 19th century (circa 1870–1890).

Finished in glossy black lacquer, the lid features a decorative cream reserve panel with raised floral decoration and delicate gilt detailing. Stylised floral sprays continue around the sides, giving the piece a balanced and elegant decorative presence. The layered japanned finish has developed gentle edge wear over time, revealing the warm underlayers beneath the lacquer and adding to its authentic antique character.

The box opens on small brass hinges to reveal a simple lacquered interior. At the front is a decorative escutcheon for a key (no key present). Its proportions make it ideal as a jewellery box, keepsake box, or simply as a decorative piece displayed on a dresser, desk or shelf.

Pieces like this were popular during the Victorian era when European makers produced japanned lacquerware inspired by Asian decorative arts.

Condition

Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with use and age. There is edge wear to the lacquer, surface marks and small areas of rubbing to the decoration. The interior shows cosmetic wear to the lacquer. The box remains structurally sound and displays beautifully. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
