English Social History G. M. Trevelyan. Published by Long man's in 1946.
Social history, writes G M Trevelyan, is 'the history of a people with the politics left out'. This magnificent book offers an unparalleled portrait of everyday English life, from the emergence of the English as 'a racial and cultural unit' in Chaucer's day through six varied and kaleidoscopic centuries to 1901. Beneath the surface of the great changes in political and military history, 'social change moves like an underground river'; it is Trevelyan's unique achievement in this inspiring and evocative book to capture every tiny detail of its ebb and flow.
This is a second UK edition hardback book. The letters are gold gilded on the spine, with a lovely teal colour.
In very good vintage condition. The pages are tanned, as is to be expected from a book that is over 80 years old. However, the spine is solid with all pages in tact and still remain crisp.
With beautiful covers, aged pages and timeless stories, vintage books make for beautiful gifts. Holding a small bit of history in your hands, they offer a glimpse into the last and gives the opportunity to read the literature in their original form.
A lovely gift for a book or history lover.
