This is a complete mid century Czech rod-controlled marionette set, made for the traditional folk theatre story known as “Čert a bába” – The Devil and the Old Woman. These home theatre sets were produced in Czechia through the 1950s–1970s and were created for family performances of classic morality tales with devils, villagers, kings and angels.
There are twelve puppets in total, all made with papier-mâché heads and hands, fabric clothing and the original wire rod controls still attached. The bodies measure approximately 15 x 6 x 3cm each. The set includes:
• The Devil
• The Devil’s Imp
• The Old Woman
• The King
• The Angel
• A Courtier or Prince
• A Huntsman/Forester
• A Jester
• Two Village Girls
• A Village Boy
• A Village Man
Each figure has its own character design and costume, typical of Czech folk marionette tradition. The devil has his distinctive mismatched feet, the angel has a full lace dress, and the king has his crown and cloak. The imp, jester and villagers add to the story scene and give the whole group a strong decorative presence when displayed together.
These mid century sets were used for small home theatres and often follow moral storylines involving temptation, redemption and village life. This set is complete and works well either as a collectable marionette troupe or as a display group of European folk art.
Condition is consistent with age, with some light wear to fabrics and paint. The wire rods and strings are intact. A visually striking group when hung or arranged together.
A lovely set for collectors of Czech puppetry, European folk art, mid century marionettes or anyone who enjoys unusual character pieces with a strong storytelling background.
