A charming pair of authentic Victorian Staffordshire Spaniel figures, traditionally known as "Wally Dogs". Standing at 16 cm tall, these "disraeli" style spaniels feature the classic forehead curls and expressive, hand-painted faces that give each dog its own unique character.
Authenticity & Details
This pair exhibits the hallmarks of genuine 19th-century Staffordshire pottery:
Hand-Painted Variations: The facial features, including the eyes and whiskers, are individually hand-applied, resulting in charming differences between the two figures.
Firing Holes: Both dogs feature small, pin-sized firing holes on their backs, a technical necessity for original Victorian pieces to allow steam to escape.
Flatback Design: Designed with a shallow depth of 6 cm, these were specifically made to sit elegantly on narrow fireplace mantels.
Luster Detailing: Remnants of the original purple-pink luster collars and gold lockets remain visible.
Unglazed Bases: The bases are un-stamped and show the natural, slightly rough texture characteristic of authentic press-molded antiques.
Condition
Crazing: The pair shows extensive, fine age-related crazing throughout the glaze, confirming their long history and authenticity.
Specific Wear: There is a very small chip on the lower edge of one dog as shown in the close-up images.
Finish: Commensurate with age, there is some expected wear to the delicate over-glaze gold luster on the lockets.
